Caesarean section birth. Moment at which a baby's head is drawn through an incision made in the mother's abdomen and uterus. Holding the head & neck firmly, the surgeon will then draw the baby's body through. The surgical operation of caesarean section is necessary when there are risks to mother & baby from natural childbirth. Such risks include problems of size & orientation in the womb - a breech presentation that cannot be corrected, for example - or obstruction of the vagina by the placenta. It is also indicated in prolonged labour, toxaemia, and if the mother suffers from genital Herpes simplex virus.
