GEORGE STEEL (deceased), ex-Mayorof Dixon, 111., was born in Will County, 10, 1842, the son of George and AnnieSteen (Morrison) Steel. George Steel was anative of Scotland and one of the prominentpioneers of Chicago, where he was largely in-strumental in organizing the Board of Tradeof that city, serving as its first Steel. was also a well-known char-acter in Chicago, building the first crib forthe water-works and the second lake July 11, 1871. he married Louise P. VanEpps of Dixon, and to them four children GEORGE STEEL. born, viz.: William, Louise L. (deceased).Georgia (wife of Theo. Fuller, editor of DixonSun), and Gladys. From 1871 Mr. Steel wasprominently connected with the interests of « HISTORY OF LEE COUNTY. 733 Dixon, where he served as a member of theCity Council and School Board, and as Mayorduring 1891-92. In political sentiment he wasa Democrat. He died March 31, 1896.
