Castleton Normal School.—October 15, 1787,it was enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ver-mont, that the place for keeping a county grammar schoolin and for Rutland county shall be at the house commonlyknown by the name of the New^ School House, near Woolcotts, in said Castleton; provided that thecounty of Rutland shall not be at any cost in completing orrepairing the same. The Rutland County Grammar Schoolstill exists, and it is the oldest chartered educational institu-tion in the State. At a special meeting of the board of educa- Present Conditions 297 tion held at Castleton August 22 and 23, 1867, a proposi-tion made by the trustees of the institution named above tothe board to make it a normal school was accepted, and theState Normal School at Castleton was established. Thewhole number of graduates from this school, up to andincluding 1914, is State Normal School, Johnson, Vt. 13. Johnson Normal School.—The Johnson Acad-emy began in a shoe shop, somewhat revised, in 1828. Afew years later a new building was provided for it, and in1836 it was incorporated as the Lamoille County GrammarSchool. In 1866 its building was enlarged, and in Decem-ber of that year the school was approved by the board ofeducation as a State normal school. It began work underState supervision February 26, 1867. The whole numberof its graduates, to and including 1914, is 1191. 298 History of Vermont 14. Randolph Normal School.—The Orange CountyGrammar School of Randolph Center was incorporatedin 1806, but had been in operation several years prior tothat timte. It continued as a county grammar school, oracademy, until 1866, when it became a
