Lumpectomy scar. Surgical scar running between the breast and armpit of a 45-year-old woman two weeks after a lumpectomy operation to treat breast cancer. Lumpectomy is the surgical excision of the malignant tumour only, and is thought to be no less successful than mastectomy, where the whole breast is removed. The operation achieves a cure in about a third of women with early breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, affecting about 1 in 20. Successful treatment depends on early detection, as once the cancer has spread it is much harder to cure. Lumpectomy is usually followed by a course of radiotherapy or anticancer drugs.
