Foraminiferan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the shell of a foraminiferan (family Globigerinidae). This single-celled animal, a relative of the amoeba, is found in marine environments. It inhabits a multi- chambered calcareous (calcium carbonate- containing) shell. In other geological periods foraminiferans were among the most common organisms; tens of thousands of fossils are known. Fossilised foraminiferans serve as a useful guide for ageing the rock formations in which they are found. This specimen was found at a depth of 20 metres in the Mediterranean Sea.
