Fallen City, a slide made up of enormous blocks of Madison Limestone that have fractured and fallen down the mountain slope

The formation called Fallen City is made up of enormous blocks of Madison Limestone that have slipped down the mountain slope due to the unstable nature of the underlying shale, and through weathering effects, such as freeze-and-thaw cycles and water runoff. A photo from the 1940's shows this slide before the forest had recovered and grown over many of the blocks of stone.
