Image from the photo album of Oberleutnant Oscar Müller of Kampfgeschwader 1: Oberleutnant Johannes Brandenburg, Staffelkapitän of 1, at Dno Airfield in Russia in early 1942. Brandenburg was killed with his crew in a mid-air explosion on 28th February 1942 after his aircraft was struck by a bomb released by another aircraft flying above. Brandenburg had been awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 18th September 1940, while serving with Stukageschwader 2 in the West.
