There he found some ofJacksons cavalry guard; and fallingupon them with great force, he drovethem out of the town and took posses-sion of the bridge. His true policy atthat moment would have been to burnthe bridge; for by that means hemight have ruined Jackson, by makingit impossible for Ewell to come to hisaid. This, however, he neglecteil todo, believing, perhaps, that he couldhold it, and that it might still be use-ful in enabling the two National armiesto form a junction. While waitingfor the arrival of his infantry, he wasjoined by General E. B. Tyler, whotook command. After assuming com-mand, Tyler was unwilling to actuntil he had received instructions fromShields. Ewell, meanwhile, had man-aged to escape from Fremont, hadbrought his troops across the river, andhad so strengthened Jackson that theConfederate had no reason any longerto fear his enemy. Discovering that anattempt was being made by the Con-federates in great strength to outflankhis left, T^der made a vigorous show.
