Grumman TBM Avenger with wings folded

The Grumman TBM Avenger was contracted to General Motors in 1941. The TBM-3 was built with strengthened wings to augment its torpedo-carrying capacity to allow rockets and radar pods. Some TBM-3's were built without the dorsal gunners turret. The TBM's torpedo delivery capability and rugged simplicity had a great impact on the Japanese fleet during WWII. Some Avengers maintained active use for more than 60 years after their debut and some were used until recently in firefighting operations in Canada. Many now exist in the hands of private collectors and warbird museums.
