In general, the new dams with their reduction of flooding and silting affect gradient, velocity, character of the bottom material, and marginal vegetation. With the disappearance of floods the flow can be carried on a reduced gradient and in a reduced cross-sectional area. The bed becomes flattened and marginal areas become overgrown with vegetation. As the reservoirs fill in, the stream above becomes aggraded. Below dams retrogression sets in. A further change is the gradual increase of coarse material on the river 7i.
