Avignon Wall Fortifications - Avignon is entirely enclosed by 4 kilometres of walls show evidence of the importance of fortifications in 14th century France. Over the years Avignon's perimeter grew and other defenses were modified, except during periods of war when the population clustered around the city's center. Avignon has had several different ramparts depending on the century. The Rocher, at its very center, served as refuge and surveillance post. Originally dating back to the Roman period, additonal walls have been built by various kings, popes and local authorites.
