A bust of Nelson Mandela by Iain Walters outside the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, London

This bronze bust of Nelson Mandela by Iain Walters replaces an original fibreglass version which became the focus for vandalism and was eventually set on fire. The statue was commissioned by the GLC and unveiled by the President of the ANC, Oliver Tambo, in 1985. The inscription on the plinth originally recorded Mandela's life imprisonment but has been subsequently updated to record his release, the award of the Nobel Peace Prize and his Presidency of South Africa.
