A road machine of great strength,especially designed for railroad use, is much used for workof this character. The blade of the machine cuts andscrapes the material from the higher points and carries it 9U RAILROAD CONSTRUCTION. along, depositing it in the low places. An experienced fore-man, with a good and well-manned machine, can almostcomplete the work on a side hill line, leaving only a littletrimming and ditching to be done by hand.
