Water industry. Ozone disinfector units being used at a waterworks to produce safe drinking water. The units use dielectric technology, using a spark of electricity across a gap to break up oxygen molecules (O2) and produce oxygen radicals that reform to produce the ozone molecule (O3). The ozone gas, which is passed through the water, is an effective disinfectant that sanitises the water by killing micro-organisms. The ozone also oxidises trace amounts of metals, pesticides and other pollutants, allowing them to be filtered from the water. Each unit uses 558 dielectric pipes and produces 8 kilograms of ozone per hour. Photographed at a waterworks operated by SMAT, the metropolitan water company of Turin, Italy.
