Melting Arctic sea ice, satellite image. North is at top. This is multiyear sea ice (ice from several seasons) at the end stage of melting in Foxe Basin, the shallow northern reaches of Hudson Bay. Foxe Basin sea ice is stained by sediment. The small islands (lower left, just south of the white hook-shaped feature) are Canada's Manning Islands. The hook-shaped white area is thought to be snow trapped in rough, ridged ice that ran up against the islands. The melting and breakup of Arctic sea ice was unusually extensive in 2012. Image obtained on 26 July 2012 by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite.
