The twospecies are very easily distinguished although beginners inbird study often get them confused. The Yellow-billedCuckoo is the largest, has a yellow lower mandible and theouter tail-feathers are black with broad white tips. TheBlack-billed species has an entirely black bill and the tailis a uniform olive-brown with narrow white tips to the outerfeathers. Both species build very shabby nests,—mere platforms ofa few twigs, usually lined with a few catkins. The eggs ofthe Yellow-billed species are considerable larger and palercolored than those of the other. Three or four eggs is anormal set. These are deposited at very irregular inter-vals, sometimes several days intervening betw^een bird often commences to set when only one egg is laid, 153. Fig. 130. NEST OF BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO. X^IB^- 154 therefore it is very common to find eggs and young birdsin the nest at once or young varying greatly in size. Our cuckoos do not lay their eggs in nests of other birds, but alvrays build their own nests. European Cuckoos, which belong to a different genus, do not build nests but laytheir eggs in nests of other birds. Much confusion exists
