Hiroo Onoda. Portrait of the Imperial Japanese Intelligence officer, Hiroo Onoda (1922-2014), c. 1944. Onoda did not surrender at the war's end in August 1945. After the war ended,he spent 29 years hiding in the Philippines until his former commander travelled from Japan to formally relieve him from duty by order of Emperor Shōwa in 1974.
