Growth and individual variability of the cervical vertebrae tend to minimize the accuracy of any identification of nonassociated specimens. Although the atlas is the most variable of the cervical verte- brae, the inclosure of the cervical extension of the thoracic retia mirabilia seems not to have resulted in any uniform modification of the upper and lower transverse processes.
