Danish Maritime Museum (M/S Museet for Sofart), Helsingor, Denmark. Architect: Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), 2013. Exhibition corri

The Maritime Museum of Denmark, which opened in October 2013, occupies a sensitive site between new Kulturværftet cultural centre in Helsingør (Elsinore) and Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) produced a dazzling response, designing the 6,500 sq m Museum as a continuous loop around a disused 1950s dry dock, linked by three sloping double-level bridges. These serve both as external shortcuts between the town and the castle, and as internal walkways between the black box galleries on the sides of the dock. A striking lecture theatre, with intersecting seating and stage slopes, is at the heart of the building. The new glass and wood structure contrasts with the rough-hewn concrete of the old dock walls. The Dutch firm designed the exhibition.
