LHerminier, in 1837, Avas the first to giveany account of its anatomy [Comptes Beiidus, v. p. 433), and fromhis time our knowledge of it has been successively increased bymany authors.^ After a minute description of the skeleton of Opisthocomus, withthe especial ol)ject of determining its affinities, Prof. Huxley ( HOACTZIN. cit.) declared that it resembles the ordinary Gallinaceous birds andPigeons more than it does any others, and that when it divergesfrom them it is either sui generis or approaches the MusophagidxrHe accordingly regarded it as the type and sole member of a group,named by him , which sprang from the greatCarinate stem later than the Tinamomorphx, Turnicomoiphm, orCharadriomorplia}, but before the Ferisferomorpha., Picrodomorpluv, orAlectoromorplbse.
