Mr. Gifford was born in Sparkford, Somer-setshire, England, July 21, 1859, a son of George Gifford, a native of thesame locality and a son of Thomas Gifford, a life-long resident of England,who died, aged eighty-nine years. George Gifford was a farmer and spenthis life in Ids native country. His wifes maiden name was Letitie was also a native of England. By this marriage union, eleven childrenwere born: Anna, Thomas, Sophia, George, John, Samuel, Susan, Eliza-beth, Emma Jane, Adelaide and William V. Of this family the ones whocame to America were: John, Samuel, Emma Jane, and William Y. Willia
