The flame and heat from the fire-box pass through thespace between the protecting arch and the reverberatory arch, so thatthe ore in the finishing section is heated only indirectly, as in a protecting arch should be as thin as possible, consistent with goodconstruction. COASTING FURNACES 101 In the chloridizing roasting of copper ores, this modified furnace hasbeen used in preference to the ordinary long reverberatory. It canreadily be seen, that for chloridizing work especially, this modification ofthe long reverberatory offers many advantages. The furnace may bestill further modified by returning the flues under the hearth, and thusheat the ore from below.
