The Eiffel Tower, photographed here in a winter's evening in 2007, was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel from Dijon and completed in 1889. It has served as a venue for many spectacular events and in recent years many lighting innovations. these have included a torch effect seen here and others such as a giant sparkler and a venue for breathtaking fireworks performances. It has five elevators or lifts and three platforms at 57 metres, 115 metres and 276 metres. It is an iconic image of French innovation which can be seen by Parisians and tourists across the whole city from many viewpoints. It is one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.
