The formation was part of a ceremony held to honor the troop ship SS Tuscania, which was sunk during World War I by a German submarine in the North Channel Feb. 5, 1918 and the Royal Navy troop ship HMS Ontario, which collided with another ship and sank in Machir Bay. The four ships sailed past a monument erected by the American Red Cross in 1920 in memory of the American seaman lost on the Tuscania.
