Corneal abrasion. A red, sore-looking eye in a case of a corneal abrasion in a 78-year-old man, caused by a scratch while gardening. The cornea is the transparent membrane which covers the front of the eyeball. It refracts light entering the eye onto the lens. The cornea contains no blood vessels, but is extremely delicate and sensitive to pain. Scratches (abrasions) may be caused by foreign bodies adhering to the membrane. Treatment consists of finding and removing any foreign particles, cleaning the cornea and allowing the eye to rest for a day or two.
