Piazzetta in Venice

This illustration of the Piazzetta in Venice, Italy, is taken from the Bodleian MS. of Polo, which dates to around 1400. The Piazza San Marco is the main square in Venice and the Piazzetta is the section of the Piazza between the Doge's Palace and Jacobo Sansovino's Library. It faces the lagoon of the Grand Canal. Its landmarks are the two columns dedicated to Venice's patrons, the Christian saints Mark and Teodoro. Atop the Mark column is the lion symbol for the evangelist Saint Mark and atop the Todaro column is the statue of the martyr Teodoro of Amasea standing on the sacred crocodile of Egypt. Note the four bronze horses brought back from Constantinople atop the Basilica San Marco (at top left). The Doge's Palace is to the right.
