One of the most visited attractions in Alaska, USA, is Portage Glacier located in Chugach National Forest about 50 miles south of Anchorage. Unfortunately, Portage Glacier is in retreat and no longer visible from the visitor center’s observation decks and telescopes. However, visitors can take an hour-long sightseeing boat cruise on Portage Lake, or hike on foot trails, to get up close to the mass of ice that has been retreating over the years up the Portage Valley. Photographed in 1990.
