A practical treatise on fractures and dislocations . Authors apparatus for fractures of the neck of the femur. Another apparatus, formerly employed by me in fractures of theneck of the femur, but for which I have lately substituted my own, isGibsons modification of Hagedorns, in which the sound limb is firstsecured to the foot-board, and the broken limb is subsequently broughtdown to the same point. By this method, as by my own apparatus,we may avoid the necessity of a perineal band, which is so painful, in-supportable often when the fracture is at the neck. In treating this fracture, supposing no displacement to exist, no ex-tension beyond that which is necessary to insure perfect quiet can beproper, inasmuch as the fragments are not overlapped; and they needonly a moderate assistance to enable them to maintain their presentposition against the action of the muscles. Moreover, if the fragmentsare impacted, violent extension would disengage them, and render theirdisplacement and non-union inevitable. Fig. Gibsons modification of Hagedorns splint. I am prepared to affirm, from my own experience, that more patientswill endure quietly the position of extension for a length of time than NECK, WITHIN THE CAPSULE. 391 the flexed position, whether in this latter the patient is placed uponhis side or upon his back. How long the patient will submit to this, or to any other mode ofsecuring perfect rest, is very uncertain, and the decision of this questionmust rest with the individual cases and the good sense of the surgeon.
