Luca Parmitano (born 1976). Portrait of the Italian and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Luca Parmitano. Parmitano was selected as an astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2009. He was a flight engineer to Expedition 36/37 to the International Space Station (ISS), an assignment known as the 'Volare' mission and flew on the Soyuz TMA-09M mission.
