In the 1860s gold miners washed away major parts of the alluvial landscape near Cromwell in Central Otago. Today table mounts are towering above deep gorges in a dry desert landscape left by the gold rush. Some tourists are climbing the Bannockburn Track to the remains of gold mining times while thyme is sending heavy smells on sunny spring days.
