A plaque in Kirkwall records the birthplace of members of the Laing family and the planting of the Big Tree. The plaque reads: 'Birthplace of / Malcolm Laing, / Historian 1762-1818 / and / Samuel Laing, / Travel Writer and Translator / of Heimskringla 1780-1868. / Their father, / Robert Laing, 1722-1803 / planted the Big Tree.' The Big Tree is a sycamore of about 200 years old. Although not particularly large, despite its name, it is a well-loved feature of the local townscape. It has been designated as a Heritage Trees of Scotland by the Forestry Commission.
