There are also several deep cutsthrough sharp ridges in the bend of the creek, and one tunnel, fourhundred feet long, called Sheppards, nineteen miles from is one of the neatest tunnels on the route, and has for its roof astratum of fine sand stone, while that below is of a shaly nature, andsomewhat soft and decomposing. The formation could not have beenrendered more desirable for tunnelling at this particular spot—thestratum of sandstone being just sufficiently elevated to allow the locomo-tive to pass under it with freedom. Shortly after emergingfrom the tunnel, we passthe Cameron station—probably named in honorof Gen. Simon Cameron,a distinguished financierand statesman of Penn- --4^- ^^^^^v? sylvania, and a most es- timable man.
