A new street was opened in 1830 from Sixth Avenue to Christopher Street,vhere it united with Asylum Street, coming in from Eighth Avenue on theiorth, and at Sixth Avenue its opening was immediately opposite Fourth;i reet, of winch, in fact, it was a continuation. The new street received theame of Asylum Street, and was so known up to December 9, 1833, at whichate it was determined to change the name to Fourth Street. The change wasnade in January, 1834. A Street Commissioners Department was created by a law passed andpproved October 5, 1831. The duty of the street commissioner required himo advertise for estimates and to contract for wells ami pumps, canals andewers, paving or repairing streets, constructing roads, building wharves andtiers; to report such estimates to the Common Council previous to furnishingontracts; to inquire into the subject matter of all applications to the Com
