Antelope Jackrabbit Lepus alleni Oracle Pinal County Arizona United States 23 July Adult Leporidae

A desert jackrabbit pauses in front of prickly pear cactus. This jackrabbit's long legs enable it to make a rapid getaway. Ears of the jack rabbit have evolved to radiate heat from large veins in the ears which carry cooled blood back to the body. The long ears also serve to detect very faint sounds at distance - in order to avoid predators.
