Protesters met at Victoria Park, Camperdown and marched along King Street to the start of Enmore Road. The protest follows an assault on a man in Newtown who was wearing a dress. Newtown is known as an alternative/bohemian suburb of Sydney. The Facebook event page said: “Newtown isn’t what it used to be. An influx of violent dickheads on weekends has made our streets unsafe to walk down. People we know and care about are bullied, harassed, threatened and beaten. We should be comfortable wearing whatever we want, looking however we feel without fear of violence or intimidation. This is about reasserting Newtown’s identity as a beautiful community of queers, weirdoes, freaks, hippies, goths, punks, ferals, migrants and everyone else who doesn’t fit in elsewhere.”
