Those who re-enlisted as veteran volunteers re-mained at the fort up to the period of their discharge, June 30th, 1865. *In addition to the two commissioned officers of the battery killed at Wau-hatchie, the command lost twenty-four men killed and wounded out of forty-eightpresent. The enemy left upon the field more men than were in the entire Unionforce opposed to them. 154 CAVALRY VOLUNTEERS. THREE YEAR ENLISTMENTS. PHILADELPHIA furnished to the Unionarmies more cavalrymen than any othercity with the possible exception of NewYork. The only body of volunteer cavalryin the field during the three months campaign, andthe first volunteer regiment of cavalry musteredinto the three-year service were of Philadelphiaorigin. This arm attracted a large element fromyouth of position and wealth. The officers weregenerally worthy of the men they led. FIFTY=NINTH REGIMENT (SECOND CAVALRY) Colonel R.
