A Man at Arms in plate armour mounted on a barded horse, and an Archer, with his bow, arrows and leaden mallet. Copperplate engraving from Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities: Respecting a History of the English Army From the Conquest to the Present Time: A New Edition with Material Additions and Improvements" 1812. Francis Grose (1731-1791) was an army officer who served in the cavalry, infantry, and militia. A keen amateur military historian, he was able to move and observe among the rank and file of the army and to gain access to the curio cabinets of the gentry. He also wrote two dictionaries of slang and cant.
