MODEL RELEASED. Determining cetane number for diesel, using an 'IQT' (Ignition Quality Tester). The cetane number (CN) is a measure of diesel combustion quality. Most engines use diesel with a CN of 40 to 55. Diesel with higher CN values (towards the 55 end of the scale) have a shorter time span between fuel injection and fuel ignition (referred to as the 'ignition delay') so they are more efficient in higher speed engines. CN values above 55, however, are not more advantageous because the fuel performance hits a plateau.
