JARED C. GREGORY, MADISON. TARED COMSTOCK GREGORY was born Jan-J uary 13, 1823, in the town of Butternut, Otsegocounty. New York. His parents were natives ofNew England, and descended from highly respecta-ble families. He was educated at GilbertsvilleAcademy, read law with Judge Noble of Unadilla,was admitted to the bar in Cortland county, New York, in 1848, was the same year to MissCharlotte C. Camp, his present wife. A daughterand two sons are the blessings of this union. Inancient Rome they would be styled jewels. He waselected a justice of the peace when quite young,was a candidate for corrgress in 1856, and removedto Wisconsin in January, 1858, settled in Madison. ^ 7 ^ ^ I e,^ THE UNITED STATES BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY. 147 and formed a partnership in the practice of the lawwith S. U. Pinney, which still continues. Abilityand learning in his profession, industry in his habits,punctuality in his engagements, have commandedthe respect and secured the confidence of the com-munity; hence his continued success. In religionhe is an Episcopalian, and his family are membersof the church. In politics he is a democrat in thesense in which Jefferson and Madison were demo-crats— as much removed from radicalism as fromcentralism. Mr. Gregorys intellectual and moralcharacter is very manifest to a close observer of men,and is equally honorable to his head and to hisheart; the basis is that of plain, practical commonsense, honesty of purpose, and sympathy with hisfellow men.
