Pine cone. Light micrograph of a section through part of a male cone (strobilus) of a pine tree (Pinus sp.). On the undersides of the scale leaves (microsporophylls) are sac-like microsporangia (blue walls) full of developing microspore pollen grains (blue dots). When the wall of a microsporangium splits open the grains are carried by the wind to the female strobilus. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
