Another objection toit lies in the fact that a gradual increase or lessening of thequantity of ether given cannot be so well effected as in thecase of Clovers inhaler. ETHER 155 Rendles mask (fig. 29) is a convenient pattern. It ismade of leather and contains a thick flannel cap which isallowed to extend beyond the lower edge and be folded backso as to rest upon the face when the mask is applied. At itssummit a sponge is placed, upon which ether is dropped insmall quantities, a drachm or two from time to time. Sub-sequently half an ounce may be used as required. A freeair-way is obtained by perforations at the summit of the the sponge freezes it must be replaced by another whichshould be ready at hand as in the case of the Ormsbysinhaler. This inhaler is also made of celluloid at the recommenda-tion of Dr. Silk, and in this form it is both handy and Fig. 29.—Rendles mask and flannel cap in cone. In the use of this mask care must be taken that too muchether is not poured on, otherwise it soaks into the flannel andmay drain over the patients face. The cone is at first heldan inch or so from the face and gradually brought neareruntil it fits closely. It is only lifted to renew the ether or toprevent cyanosis. Open inhalers.—The simplest form is a towel or piece ofmillboard rolled in the shape of a cone with a sponge placedat its summit. Ether is poured upon this and renewed fromtime to time. This plan is not satisfactory, and unless inexceptional cases, when there is great asthenia or collapse, itis difficult to produce complete anaesthesia with it. AUis inhaler.—This is I think the best semi-openether inhaler ; for while it can be used for chloroform, , or other mixture, it is always available when it is 156 ANESTHETICS. desirable to give ether largely diluted with air.
