The road between Geidam and Maiduguri wasappallingly sandy, and the going so severe a strainon the horse, that one could only go at walkingpace most of the way. After Geidam, however,it got a bit better, and also, as a relief horse, Ibought the famous Danda,1 whom I putstraight between the shafts, and drove withoutany breaking! The trek to Kano via Katagum was uneventful, save for an encounter with a wounded wart-hog,whose onslaught Bisalla bravely received with a 1 A piebald, who subsequently must have covered almostall the possible mileage in the Protectorate. I used to drivehim to the polo-ground, ride him in two ehukkers, and thendrive him back !. A LAKE CHAD POLO-CLUB GROUP.
