James II, King of England, Scotland and Ireland. Portrait of James (1633-1701), the second surviving son of King Charles I, who became king on the death of his brother, Charles II. A Catholic, he lost the throne in 1688 to the Protestant William of Orange in what came to be known as the 'Glorious Revolution'.
