CORNEA, SEM
The cornea is a transparent membrane covering the iris. Its convex form acts like a lens which plays a role in refraction. The cornea is composed of several layers. The first layer is an epithelium covered with a lacrimal film. Under the epithelium a layer of collagen fibers form the stroma. The third layer is the corneal endothelium under the stroma. The cells in the corneal endothelium are hexagonal. The cornea is nourished by the aqueous humor and is connected with the sclera at a point called the sclerocorneal limbus. SEM x 2400.
