An 1865 photographic portrait of Major General Horatio G Wright. Horatio Gouverneur Wright ( 1820 – 1899) was an engineer and general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Wright was responsible for building the fortifications around Washington DC, and commanded the first troops to break through the Confederate defenses at Petersburg in the Overland Campaign . He also contributed to the building of Brooklyn Bridge, the Washington Monument, and became Chief of Engineers for the Army Corps of Engineers.
