Mould on a lemon (centre), with unaffected lemons and chillies (top). The fungus has secreted digestive enzymes, breaking down the lemon's tissues to obtain nutrients. Common moulds that affect citrus fruits like lemons are blue mould and green mould. Both are forms of the Penicillium fungus: Penicillium italicum (blue) and Penicillium digitatum (green). Photographed in Italy.
