John Eliot Preaches to Indians

John Eliot (1604-1690) was an English missionary in colonial Massachusetts. Called the Apostle to the Indians, he established villages for Christian natives and translated between 1661-1663 the Bible into an Algonquian Indian language, the first Bible printed in North America. In this late 1800s engraving, Eliot is shown preaching to the Indians.
