The 13th century Schist stone figure of Ganesha is on loan from the British Museum and on display at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, southern England’s well known seaside resort. The 13th century Schist stone figure of Ganesha is on loan from the British Museum and on display at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, southern England’s well known seaside resort. Ganesha, an elephant head, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. It is revered as the remover of obstacles and patron of letters and learning. On 19th September the shrine was dressed by members of the Dorset India Association. On Sunday 20th September the Hindu community enacts a Puja (act of showing reverence to a god). There is whole family involvement including children’s activities/competitions followed by a procession to the Lower Gardens and immersion of 12 small Ganesha in the Bourne stream. The statue will then move on to other venues around the country for similar events.
