The species was named for William Spencer Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, whohad a magnificent collection of plants at Chatsworth. Cereus anguiniformis (Weingart, Monatsschr. Kakteenk. 18:6. 1908) and C. saxicolaanguinijormis Riccobono (Boll. R. Ort. Bot. Palermo 8: 252. 1909) probably belong here.
