False colour transmission electron micrograph of Bacillus subtilis, showing an individual of the rod-shaped, gram-positive species of bacteria towards the end of division by binary fission. The cytoplasms of the two daughter cells are divided by a densely stained cell wall (which also surrounds the entire bacterium). The pale areas in each half of the dividing cell are nuclear bodies, containing genetic information in the form of DNA. In rapidly growing bacterial cells, the process of nuclear division proceeds ahead of cell division. B. subtilis also produces endospores (resting cells) which germinate & give rise to vegetative cells. Magnification: x14,300 at 35mm size. Original is bw print b220/165.
